Rubbish Removal & House Clearance in Luton (LU1–LU4)

Luton gives us two very different kinds of job. The inner town — High Town, Bury Park, Dallow and the streets either side of the Alma and the Mall, most of it LU1 and LU3 — is dense Victorian and Edwardian terraced housing with narrow hallways, steep stairs and almost no off-street parking, so clearances there are hand-carry jobs and we plan the van position before we arrive. Out north and east it flips: Stopsley, Round Green, Wigmore, Barnfield and Putteridge are 1930s semis and post-war estates with driveways and garages, where the work is bigger-volume — garage and loft clear-outs, garden waste, whole-room furniture runs. Luton also has one of the largest private rental and HMO markets in the East of England, which keeps a steady flow of end-of-tenancy clearances and landlord rubbish removal running all year rather than just over the summer.

If you are thinking of running the load to the tip yourself, check the rules before you load the van. Luton has two tidy tips — Eaton Green Road (LU2 9RT) and Progress Way (LU4 9TR) — both open Monday 9am to 7pm, Tuesday to Friday 9am to 5pm, and Saturday and Sunday 8am to 5pm. A car needs nothing. Turn up in a van, pick-up or towing a trailer and you need a permit from Luton Borough Council, and although the permit is free it is deliberately limited: it covers three visits and is valid for one month only. Permitted vans also have to be in earlier than cars — last entry is 30 minutes before closing, so the site shuts to you at 4:30pm on a normal weekday.

The council's own bulky waste collection is the other route, and the pricing looks reasonable until you read where they collect from. Luton Borough charges a minimum of £36.15 for the first three items and £7.07 for each additional item, up to a maximum of ten, with the fee halved for households on a means-tested benefit. The catch is the same one every council has: crews do not come inside. Items have to be outside at pavement level — if there are steps up from the footpath, at the bottom of the steps — and they will not take anything left on the road or more than five metres from where the lorry can safely stop. If the wardrobe is on the first floor, the sofa is in the back room or the fridge-freezer is in the garage, that whole part of the job is still yours. We do the opposite: we carry it out from wherever it actually sits, from £95, usually same or next day, with no ten-item cap.

A steady share of our Luton work is probate and estate clearance. Access is the easy part. Luton sits on the M1 at junctions 10, 10a and 11, with the A505 running east to Hitchin, the A6 north to Bedford and the Luton–Dunstable Busway cutting west, so our LWB Sprinter is in and out without a fight and cross-town runs to Dunstable, Leighton Buzzard and Bedford are straightforward. Man and van hire is £95 an hour with a two-person crew and a two-hour minimum, which covers the smaller end: flat moves near the station, Marketplace and eBay pick-ups, store collections and single-item runs.
