Bring a van, a pick-up, or a car towing a single-axle trailer and you also need a waste permit. Each permit covers one visit, households get a maximum of 12 in a rolling 12 months, and vans and pick-ups towing trailers are refused outright.

The permit system also caps what you can bring. Mattresses are limited to two per household per year, carpet and underlay to two visits a year, DIY and construction waste to six items a month, engine oil to 20 litres, large gas bottles to two a year and fire extinguishers to one a year. Tyres are accepted but charged at £11.70 each. For a normal declutter that is all fine. For a house clearance, a post-renovation strip-out or a landlord turnaround it is not — you would be booking slots for weeks. That is the gap we fill: one visit, one van, no caps and no permits, because the duty of care sits with us rather than with you.

Central Bedfordshire's bulky waste collection is the other option, and it is worth knowing exactly what it does. The council charges £69.80 for a collection of up to 12 larger household items — beds, wardrobes, washing machines, TVs, tables and one fridge or freezer — reduced to £35.20 for households claiming Housing Benefit or Council Tax Support. The limitation is placement: everything must be outside your property and in position by 7am on the collection day. Crews do not come inside. If the wardrobe is upstairs, the sofa is in the back room or the freezer is in the garage, that is the actual work and it is still yours.
