Rubbish Removal & House Clearance in Stevenage (SG1 & SG2)

Stevenage was the first town designated under the New Towns Act 1946, and that history still shapes almost every job we do here. The residential areas — Bedwell, Shephall, Chells, Broadwater, Symonds Green, Pin Green — were built out from the 1950s to the 1970s as planned neighbourhood units, which means a very large stock of similar-era semis, terraces and maisonettes, much of it originally council-built. Practically, that is good news: consistent layouts, decent access, and gardens laid out to a plan. The Old Town High Street is the exception, the pre-New-Town settlement with older properties and tighter access — different work entirely, and the kind of house clearance where things come out by hand.

If you are tempted to run a load to the tip yourself, the Hertfordshire rules are stricter than most people expect. Stevenage Recycling Centre is on Caxton Way, SG1 1XW, open 10am–6pm Monday to Friday and Sunday, and 8am–6pm on Saturday. Cars, 4x4s and people carriers under eight seats need no permit. But vans, pickups, camper vans, cars towing trailers, and any vehicle with eight or more seats or with rear seats removed for commercial use need a Hertfordshire van and trailer ePass. It is free and instant online — but it is capped at 12 visits in 12 months, with, in the council's own words, no exceptions to that rule, and only one ePass is allowed per household. If you use an employer's van, the ePass belongs to the van, so everyone using it shares the same 12 visits. Booking us costs you none of those visits.

The council's own bulky waste collection is the other route, and it is Stevenage Borough Council rather than the county that runs it. The charge is £51.00 for one to three items, rising per item to £149.00 for ten, with a concession rate for four or more items for households on means-tested benefits. It takes cookers, carpets, dishwashers, mattresses, tables, settees, free-standing wardrobes, washing machines, beds, bicycles, fridges and freezers. It explicitly will not take business or trade waste, builder's waste, kitchen units, bathroom suites, gas bottles, motor vehicle parts, asbestos, fencing, sheds or greenhouses. And the standard service collects from outside the property only — the crew does not come in. The collection window is 7am to noon with no fixed slot, cancelling needs a working day's notice or a £12 fee applies, and bookings cannot be amended once made. We do the opposite: we carry it out from wherever it sits, take the things they refuse, and price it from £95.
