Rubbish Removal & House Clearance in Milton Keynes (MK1–MK17)

Milton Keynes was designated a new town on 23 January 1967 under the New Towns Act 1965, absorbing the existing towns of Bletchley, Wolverton and Stony Stratford along with the surrounding villages, and it became a city in August 2022. For a van business, the two things that matter most about that history are both practical. First, the grid road system — eleven roughly north–south V roads and ten east–west H roads set out in the 1970 plan — means wide, consistent roads and roundabout access into every grid square, so loading is genuinely easier here than in an old town centre. Second, MK has the newest housing stock of any major town or city in England and Wales, with a median build period of 1983–1992. That shows up in the work: fewer awkward Victorian staircases, more garage and loft clear-outs, more garden waste from mature 1980s and 1990s plots, and a lot of move-in and move-out clearances.

The city is also still growing hard — the population rose from 248,821 in 2011 to 287,060 in 2021, up 15.4% — and the Western Expansion Area west of the city has outline permission for 6,500 homes across 864 acres, with roughly half delivered so far and Whitehouse alone accounting for 4,400 of them. New-build handover generates a particular kind of job: packaging, offcuts, turf and soil from landscaping, and the furniture that did not survive the move. That sits alongside the older, denser work in Bletchley, Wolverton and New Bradwell.

If you are thinking of running a load to a recycling centre yourself, MK's rules are stricter than most councils' and catch people out. There are three sites — Bleak Hall (Chesney Wold, MK6 1NE), New Bradwell (Newport Road, MK13 0AH) and Newport Pagnell (North Crawley Road, MK16 9HG) — all open 8am–5pm in winter (1 October to 31 March) and 7am–7pm in summer (1 April to 30 September). Booking is mandatory at all three, online or on 01908 252570, up to seven days ahead, and you must bring the confirmation email plus proof of address. Vehicle rules then narrow it further: Bleak Hall takes cars only, under 2m in height — no vans at all. New Bradwell takes cars, trailers and vans under 2m, but not a van towing a trailer. Newport Pagnell routes taller and commercial vehicles through a separate trade entrance. Vans towing trailers are refused everywhere, and commercial vehicles need a valid waste carriers licence and pay trade rates.

The council's own bulky waste collection is the other route, and it has one limitation that decides most of our jobs here. Milton Keynes City Council prices bulky collections on a points system rather than a published price list — the cost is generated only when you complete the online booking form for your address, so there is no figure to quote in advance. Collection is typically within 48 hours, or scheduled up to 14 days out, and it costs £10 to move to a different day. The limitation is where they collect from. In the council's own words: "We will not go into back gardens and are not able to enter your house/flat/apartment or any outbuilding to collect any items." Items must be visible from the road by 7am, under six feet long, liftable by a two-person crew, and emptied — no food in the fridge, no clothes in the wardrobe. We go inside, and we go into the back garden. That is the whole difference, and it is why the shed, the garage and the upstairs wardrobe end up with us. From £95, usually same or next day.
