House Clearance & Man and Van in Burnham (SL1)

House clearance is the job we're called to most in Burnham. It's one of south Buckinghamshire's oldest villages — the High Street keeps its 18th and 19th-century frontages, St Peter's Church is partly 12th-century, and Burnham Abbey has stood since Richard, Earl of Cornwall founded it in 1266 — and homes here are often held by the same family for decades. Here's the local wrinkle: Burnham has its own tip, and it's shut two days a week. The Burnham recycling centre on Crowpiece Lane, SL2 3TG is closed every Wednesday and Thursday, opening the other five days — 9am to 6pm in summer, 9am to 4pm from October to March. Cars get in without booking, but arrive in a van, pick-up or with a large trailer and you need a free vehicle waste e-permit arranged in advance (the first one only lasts 31 days), and business or commercial waste is refused outright. The council route is Buckinghamshire's bulky waste collection: £65 for one to three items, £130 for four to six, £195 for seven to nine, capped at nine per booking. Everything must be outside your property by 6am, and the service won't take building or DIY materials, bathroom fixtures, garden waste, tyres or pianos. Then there's the green side of the village. Burnham sits hard against Burnham Beeches — 374 hectares of ancient pollarded woodland owned and managed by the City of London Corporation since 1879, now a National Nature Reserve and Special Area of Conservation whose oldest tree, the Druids Oak, has stood for centuries (film crews love it too: scenes from Harry Potter and The Princess Bride were shot here).
