South Bucks Tip & Recycling Centres: Amersham, Beaconsfield & Burnham Guide

Which Buckinghamshire recycling centres serve Gerrards Cross, the Chalfonts, Beaconsfield, Denham and Iver — the opening hours, the all-important van waste-permit rule, what you can and can’t take, and when a same-day collection saves you the trip.

Household waste loaded ready for a recycling centre run in South Buckinghamshire

bolt Quick Answer

There is no tip in Gerrards Cross or the Chalfonts themselves. The nearest Household Recycling Centres run by Buckinghamshire Council are Beaconsfield (A40 London Road, HP9 2XB), Amersham (London Road East, HP7 9DT) and Burnham (Crowpiece Lane, SL2 3TG). You don’t need to book, and they’re free for Buckinghamshire residents with proof of address — but if you turn up in a van, pick-up, minibus or with a large trailer you must have a free vehicle waste permit arranged in advance, business/trade waste is banned outright, and DIY/building waste is capped by a permit allowance. If you’d rather not load the car or wrangle a permit, a same-day man-and-van collection starts from £75 and does the lifting. Always check buckinghamshire.gov.uk for current details before you travel.

If you live in Gerrards Cross, Chalfont St Peter, Chalfont St Giles, Beaconsfield, Denham or Iver, the household waste and recycling centre — the “tip” — is the obvious place to take a boot-load of clear-out. The catch is that South Bucks doesn’t have a centre in every town, the vehicle rules trip up anyone using a van, and it’s a job you’re doing yourself: loading, driving, queuing and unloading.

This guide sets out which Buckinghamshire recycling centres serve the SL9 area, their opening hours, whether you need to book, the van and permit rules that catch people out, and what the sites will and won’t accept. Everything below is drawn from Buckinghamshire Council’s own published guidance — but hours and permit terms do change, so confirm the current details on buckinghamshire.gov.uk before you set off.

Which recycling centre serves your town?

A common question is “where’s the Chalfont tip?” or “is there a recycling centre in Gerrards Cross?” The honest answer is that there isn’t one in either — Buckinghamshire Council runs a smaller number of larger sites, and residents in the south of the county travel to whichever is closest. For the SL9 postcode and its neighbours, that’s usually one of three:

If you’re in… Nearest centre(s)
Gerrards Cross, Chalfont St PeterBeaconsfield, then Amersham
Chalfont St Giles, Little ChalfontAmersham, then Beaconsfield
BeaconsfieldBeaconsfield
DenhamBeaconsfield or Burnham
Iver, BurnhamBurnham

These are guides based on location, not fixed catchments — as a Buckinghamshire resident you can use any of the county’s centres (there are others at Chesham, High Wycombe and Aylesbury for the wider area). Distances are best checked on a map for your exact address.

Beaconsfield recycling centre

This is the closest centre for most of Gerrards Cross and Chalfont St Peter.

  • placeAddress: A40 London Road, Lower Pyebushes, Beaconsfield, HP9 2XB.
  • scheduleOpening hours: open daily, 9am to 6pm, including all bank holidays except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
  • event_availableBooking: not required — you don’t need an appointment.

It’s one of the larger sites in the area, with 11 unloading bays. The council notes it’s usually quietest on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, and that during busy periods — especially weekends — last entry may be slightly before 6pm so the site can clear before closing. If you’re coming in a van, read the permit section below first.

Amersham recycling centre

Handiest for Chalfont St Giles, Little Chalfont and the north of the SL9 area.

  • placeAddress: London Road East, Amersham, HP7 9DT.
  • scheduleOpening hours: open every day, 9am to 6pm, including bank holidays except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
  • event_availableBooking: not required.

Amersham has 6 unloading spaces and, like the others, tends to be quieter on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. The same vehicle rules apply: vans, pick-ups and minibuses need a permit, and there are limits on very large vehicles (nothing over 7.5 tonnes, no more than four wheels, and no tippers or tail-lifts).

Burnham recycling centre

The nearest option for Iver, Burnham and parts of Denham.

  • placeAddress: Crowpiece Lane, Farnham Royal, Burnham, SL2 3TG.
  • scheduleOpening hours: 9am to 6pm on Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday — closed Wednesday and Thursday. Open on bank holidays except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
  • event_availableBooking: not required.

The mid-week closure is the thing to remember here — plenty of people drive over on a Wednesday or Thursday only to find the gates shut. It has 6 unloading bays and is busiest on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, with Tuesday mornings the quietest. Always confirm the current days and hours on the council website before travelling.

Do you need to book a slot?

No. Unlike some London boroughs and neighbouring counties that run appointment-only tips, Buckinghamshire Council’s recycling centres are drop-in — you don’t need to book an appointment to visit in a car. Access is free for Buckinghamshire residents, and you may be asked for proof of address, so it’s worth carrying something with your name and address on it.

There are two things that do need arranging in advance, though, and both catch people out: the vehicle waste permit for vans and larger vehicles, and the walk-in permit you need if you’re arriving on foot rather than in a vehicle. Both are covered next.

Van, trailer and permit rules

This is the single biggest thing to get right before you drive to a South Bucks tip. Cars are fine and need nothing extra. But if you turn up in a larger vehicle, you must already hold a free vehicle waste permit from Buckinghamshire Council. According to the council, you need one if you visit in a:

  • local_shippingVan or pick-up
  • airport_shuttleMinibus (8 to 11 seats)
  • local_shippingFlatbed truck
  • rv_hookupVehicle towing a trailer bigger than 0.9m × 1.2m

The permit is free, but you have to apply for it in advance — you can’t just show up and sort it at the barrier. It’s valid for 31 days (up to 90 days on renewal), and you apply online through the council’s waste-permit page. There are also hard limits on vehicle size at these sites: nothing over 7.5 tonnes, no more than four wheels, and no tippers or tail-lifts.

Trade and business waste is banned. The recycling centres are for household waste from Buckinghamshire residents only. Traders and businesses can’t use them — even for genuinely small loads — and must arrange a separate business waste and recycling service. Using a van doesn’t make waste “trade” waste, but it does mean the permit rules apply.

If you’re arriving on foot rather than in a vehicle, note that you need a separate walk-in permit to enter the site. All of this is set out, with the current application forms, on buckinghamshire.gov.uk.

What you can and can’t take

For everyday household clear-outs, the centres accept a broad range of materials free of charge, including furniture, mattresses, large and small electrical appliances, televisions, garden waste, general household waste, paper, clothing, carpet and batteries.

DIY and building waste is treated differently. Buckinghamshire caps the free allowance for construction-type waste and requires a permit for it. The council’s free allowance covers either two 50-litre bags of DIY waste, or one large item (up to 2m × 0.75m × 0.7m), per visit — anything beyond that is chargeable per item. DIY/building waste includes things like hardcore, rubble, timber, bathroom and kitchen fittings, plumbing and roofing materials, windows and doors. Hazardous materials such as asbestos and plasterboard have their own separate limits and permit requirements.

A handful of items are refused entirely, including car parts, certain very large tree trunks and branches, and anything flammable or explosive. Because these allowances and charges are reviewed periodically, check the current what-you-can-take list on buckinghamshire.gov.uk before loading up — especially for a renovation or big DIY clear-out, where the per-item charges can add up quickly.

When a same-day collection makes more sense

The tip is the cheapest route if you’ve got a car-boot’s worth of household items, a free morning and the muscle to load and unload it yourself. It gets a lot less convenient the moment any of these apply: you’d need a van (and therefore a permit arranged days ahead), you’ve got building or garden waste over the DIY allowance, the items are heavy or upstairs, or you simply don’t have the time to queue.

That’s where a man-and-van rubbish removal earns its place. We come to you across Gerrards Cross and the wider SL9 area — usually same or next day — carry everything out from inside, upstairs or the garden, and take the mixed loads a household tip caps or refuses. There’s no permit to apply for and no trip to make.

It’s priced by the volume we take away, not per slot: single items from £75, a quarter load from £125, a half load from £210 and a full Luton van from £340. Send a photo on WhatsApp and you’ll get a fixed, all-inclusive price before the van sets off. We also cover nearby Slough, High Wycombe and Chorleywood.

Before booking any waste collection: ask the operator to identify the registered carrier handling the job and provide the registration number, then verify it free on the Environment Agency public register before handing over your waste. Keep a note of who took it and where — it’s your legal protection against fly-tipping liability.

South Bucks Recycling Centre FAQs

Is there a recycling centre in Gerrards Cross or the Chalfonts?

No. There’s no household recycling centre in Gerrards Cross, Chalfont St Peter or Chalfont St Giles. The nearest Buckinghamshire Council centres are Beaconsfield (HP9 2XB) and Amersham (HP7 9DT).

Do I need to book to use a Buckinghamshire tip?

No. You don’t need to book an appointment to visit Amersham, Beaconsfield or Burnham recycling centres. Access is free for Buckinghamshire residents, and you may be asked for proof of address.

Can I take a van to the recycling centre?

Yes, but only with a free vehicle waste permit arranged in advance. You need one for a van, pick-up, minibus, flatbed truck or a vehicle towing a trailer bigger than 0.9m × 1.2m. Cars don’t need a permit. Apply online at buckinghamshire.gov.uk.

What days is Burnham recycling centre open?

Burnham (Crowpiece Lane, SL2 3TG) opens 9am to 6pm on Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and is closed on Wednesday and Thursday. Amersham and Beaconsfield open every day, 9am to 6pm. Always confirm current hours on the council website.

Can I take building or DIY waste?

Yes, within a limited free allowance (roughly two 50-litre bags or one large item per visit) and with a permit — extra DIY/building waste is charged per item. Trade and business waste is banned from household centres entirely.

Is a man-and-van collection cheaper than the tip?

The tip is cheaper for a small car-boot load you transport yourself. A man-and-van (single items from £75) works out easier when you’d otherwise need a van and permit, have heavy or upstairs items, or have mixed loads over the DIY allowance — and you only pay for the volume removed.
