That means no bin-week confusion and no sorting into separate containers. It also means the constraints are different: there is a limit to what a sack holds, and sacks left out early get torn open.

The clear-sack system is the thing to get right. Paper, cardboard, glass and plastics all go in the same clear sack — there is no separate glass box and no separate paper stream. Sacks are free and you can order more online.
Food waste is a sign-up service, available to houses and maisonettes with private gardens. Subscribers get a kitchen caddy, a roll of caddy liners and an external food storage bin to hold the full bags between collections.
Weekly is a genuine advantage — use it
Because rubbish and recycling are both weekly, Hillingdon households rarely face the overflow problem that fortnightly boroughs create. The practical consequence: if you are consistently producing more than the weekly collection handles, it is usually a one-off event — a clear-out, a refit, a house move — rather than a capacity problem needing an extra bin.
Getting your waste out in time
Collections run Monday to Friday, starting at 6am. Waste must be at the front of your property before 6am on your collection day.
The council asks that, where possible, you keep bags and containers inside your property boundary and off pavements and roads to avoid causing an obstruction. That is a real consideration on the narrower residential streets around Uxbridge and Yiewsley.
Separate arrangements apply to flats and business premises — flats with bulk bins have their own reporting route.
Bank holidays shift everything by a day
Over bank holiday periods Hillingdon shifts each collection forward by one day and works the following Saturday to catch up. For the August 2026 bank holiday, Monday 31 August moved to Tuesday 1 September, and so on through the week to Friday 4 September collecting on Saturday 5 September. The 1.30pm rule for missed collections
This is the detail that trips people up most often. Hillingdon will not accept a missed-collection report until after 1.30pm on your collection day — because crews may still be working your round.

There are separate reporting forms for rubbish, dry mixed recycling, garden waste and food waste, and separate ones again for houses versus flats with bulk bins. Use the right one or the report may not reach the right crew.

The £77 garden waste service
Hillingdon’s garden waste collection is a paid annual subscription costing £77 for 2026/27. Unusually, it is available to all households with a garden, including maisonettes and flats — many boroughs exclude flats entirely.
At £77 it is among the more expensive garden services in West London: Harrow charges £69, Slough £55, Buckinghamshire £65. Whether it is worth it depends entirely on whether you generate garden waste all year or in two or three big bursts.
The non-subscriber problem
If you do not subscribe, you have three options for garden waste: compost it, drive it to the Harefield tip, or have it collected. That is precisely the queue we pick up — a hedge cut back in spring or a garden cleared before a house sale is a one-off job, and paying £77 a year for two events rarely makes sense. Bulky items, the tip, and the free Pop-up Waste Drop

The tips. Hillingdon residents now have more than one option, which is a recent change. The main site is the Harefield Civic Amenity Site, New Years Green Lane, UB9 6LX — no booking for cars, but you need a HillingdonFirst card, and vans and trailers are capped at 12 visits a year and must carry two forms of ID. Since 15 July residents can also use Space Waye Reuse and Recycling Centre at North Feltham Trading Estate, Pier Road, Feltham, TW14 0TH, which is open seven days a week (book a slot for Friday, weekend and bank-holiday visits; Monday to Thursday you can just turn up) and is considerably closer for the south of the borough. Pop-up Waste Drop — free, and barely publicised
Hillingdon runs a mobile waste collection service that visits locations around the borough where you can drop off unwanted and bulky items free of charge. If your timing happens to line up with a visit near you, it is the cheapest route for a few bulky items — genuinely better value than a booked bulky collection. What goes in the clear sack — and what ruins it
Paper, cardboard, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays, tins, cans and clean foil — all in the same clear sack, loose and not bagged inside another bag.
What must not go in — this is the difference between a collected bin and a rejected one:
- Food waste — it has its own caddy service
- Nappies, textiles and sanitary items
- Plastic bags, cling film and wrapping
- Polystyrene and black plastic
- Drinking glasses, Pyrex and ceramics — bottles and jars only
- Garden waste, wood, rubble and DIY materials
- Electricals, batteries and lightbulbs
Because everything goes in one sack, the failure mode here is different from a bin borough: an overfilled sack splits, and a split sack across a pavement is a fly-tipping complaint waiting to happen. Use more sacks rather than overloading — they are free and you can order more online.

Hillingdon is the outlier in the right direction: the only council of the six collecting both rubbish and recycling weekly. It also has the most generous missed-collection window at 72 hours. The trade-off is the second-highest garden waste charge at £77.
Two things are worth taking from that table. First, the missed-bin reporting windows are all different — from Watford’s 24 hours to Hillingdon’s 72 — and missing yours means waiting for the next scheduled collection. Second, garden waste ranges from £55 to £89 for a broadly similar fortnightly service, and Slough’s headline £55 becomes £107 in year one if you need to buy the bin.
