Quick Answer
Van Thats Quick is a dedicated same-day van courier: one item, one driver, nothing else in the back, collected today where the diary allows. A local marketplace collection is £45. One item anywhere within the M25 is £55. Outside the M25 it is £1.90 a loaded mile with a £95 minimum covering the first fifty — Brighton about £114, Birmingham £238, Manchester £380, Edinburgh £760 overnight. Add £45 for a second person.
"Courier" covers three completely different products, and most of the confusion about price comes from comparing them as if they were one. A parcel network moves small boxed things cheaply through depots. A shared van puts your item in with eight or ten other jobs on somebody else's route. A dedicated van courier sends one driver on one run for you alone, today. Van Thats Quick is the third of those, and this page sets out honestly when it is the right one.
The ladder has two halves. Inside the M25 it is flat: a local marketplace or private-seller collection is £45, and any single item is £55 whether the run is three miles or twenty-five. Outside the M25 it is £1.90 for every loaded mile from the collection door to the delivery door, with a £95 minimum covering the first fifty — the same way every dedicated same-day courier in the country prices. Several pieces in one run is a £195 van load. Add £45 where the item needs two people, or £25 for a second item from the same pickup. Hourly crew work is a separate product at £89 an hour with two movers.
Why the headline prices you see elsewhere are lower. The cheap figures on the big platforms are shared-van prices: one van, eight or ten jobs, a route built around the driver's week, and a collection window several days wide that can move. That is real value when your item is not urgent and somebody is in at both ends whenever it arrives. It is not the same thing as a van that leaves for your job in two hours with nothing else in it. We are not the cheapest and we do not claim to be — we are the one that goes today.
We are based in Uxbridge (UB8) and Chalfont St Peter, work seven days from 7am to 10pm, and run Luton, LWB and SWB vans matched to the load rather than sending the biggest one every time. Trolleys, straps, moving blankets and floor protection are standard, the driver loads and carries, the Congestion Charge (£18) is passed through only where it genuinely applies, and the vans are ULEZ-compliant. Ask us for the current insurance certificate, cover limits and exclusions before you book.
Dedicated van, parcel network or shared van
Three products, three price levels, three different things going wrong when you pick the wrong one. Here is the honest comparison, including the cases where we are not the answer.
- A parcel network is cheapest and is right for anything small, boxed and under roughly 30kg with a longest side under about 1.5m. Your item shares a route through depots and sorting hubs, which is exactly why it costs a few pounds. If your thing fits those limits, use one — we will tell you so on the phone.
- A shared van — the marketplaces where drivers bid — is cheap because your item fills space on a van already going that way with several other jobs on board. The headline is genuinely low. The trade is the date: the driver has to already be passing, so quotes come with a window of several days that can move, and you rarely speak to the person who turns up.
- A dedicated van courier is one driver committed to your job today. Nothing else is in the back, the driver loads and carries, and there is one number to ring. It costs more than a bid on a platform, and where you need it collected this afternoon or carried upstairs, that is exactly what the difference buys.
Where the item is big but the date is flexible and the budget is tight, a shared-van marketplace will usually beat us on price. Where the date matters, where the item is valuable or awkward, where somebody has to actually carry it in, or where you want to speak to a person rather than a platform, a dedicated van wins on every measure except the headline number. See the comparison table below for what each provider actually publishes.
How per-mile pricing works
Outside the M25 the sum is one line: £1.90 for every loaded mile between the collection door and the delivery door, with a £95 minimum that covers anything up to about fifty. Loaded miles are the miles your item is actually in the van — the run out to you and the empty leg home are already inside the rate, and there is no fuel surcharge on the end. You can check the number against a map before you ring.
| From London to | Loaded miles | One item, one driver | When it lands |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oxford | 55 | £105 | Same day — collected and delivered today |
| Brighton | 60 | £114 | Same day |
| Bristol | 120 | £228 | Same day |
| Birmingham | 125 | £238 | Same day |
| Manchester | 200 | £380 | Same day with an early start |
| Edinburgh | 400 | £760 | Overnight — delivered next morning |
Inside the M25 the per-mile rate does not apply at all: one item is a flat £55, and a local marketplace collection is £45. The entry jobs sit alongside it — a store or click-and-collect run is £55, an appliance or white-goods delivery is £55. Add-ons are short: £45 for a second person, £25 for a second item from the same pickup, and £15 per fifteen minutes after the first twenty at each end. Nothing is charged for the day of the week, the time of day or an urgent slot.
Same-day and urgent courier work
Same-day is the product, not an add-on. Where the diary allows we collect today — usually within about two hours of your call — and deliver today anywhere up to roughly 200 loaded miles. Beyond that it runs overnight at the same per-mile rate and lands the next morning. There is no urgency surcharge: a same-day item inside the M25 is the ordinary £55.
- This is the thing a shared van structurally cannot promise, because it needs somebody else's route to exist today — and today is precisely when it usually does not.
- Ring early. One van does one job at a time, so slots go in the order they are booked. A morning call almost always gets a same-day answer; a late-afternoon one usually becomes first thing tomorrow.
- We do not publish a cut-off time, because there is not an honest one to publish. It depends on where the van already is and how far your job runs. Ask and you will get a straight answer in a minute.
- Seven days, 7am to 10pm. Evenings and weekends are ordinary working time, not an out-of-hours premium.
- The usual urgent jobs are a retailer's own delivery that failed, a seller moving out at five, a part a site needs before the shift ends, or a marketplace collection with a deadline the buyer did not set.
More detail on same-day delivery, and our same-day courier guide and emergency delivery guide cover what to expect from the market generally.
Business and trade runs
A good deal of our courier work is for businesses rather than households, and it is the easiest work we do because the route and the timing are usually already known.
- Retail and showroom deliveries. You sell it, we deliver it, on your brand's timescale rather than a network's. A fixed per-mile price means you can quote your own customer with confidence before the van moves.
- Site and trade runs. Materials, fittings, tools and plant between depot and site. A dedicated van means the part arrives when the trade is standing there, not the following afternoon.
- Office and equipment moves. Desks, IT kit, display units and stock between premises, out of hours where that suits.
- Standing or recurring runs. A regular collection between two addresses is priced properly as a route rather than as a fresh one-off every week — ring and we will work it out.
- Failed-delivery rescue. A customer's item stuck at a depot or refused at a door, collected and re-delivered the same day.
Everything is invoiced, and the price is fixed before collection so it can go straight onto a job sheet. See commercial deliveries and van and driver hire for longer bookings.
What we carry, and the page for each
Every one of these sits on the ladder above. The item pages carry the detail — sizes, access, and the questions that come up most for that thing.
- Furniture. Furniture courier and delivery for wardrobes, tables, drawers and sideboards; sofa courier for two-seat, three-seat and corner sofas; bed delivery and mattress delivery for frames, divans and mattresses.
- Appliances. Appliance delivery, fridge delivery and washing machine delivery — positioned, not dropped at the door.
- Big and heavy. Large item courier for anything past a parcel network's weight and length limits.
- Shop and marketplace buys. IKEA delivery, eBay collection, Gumtree collection and marketplace delivery.
- Careful things. Fragile items, art transport, antique moving and piano moving, each of which is a different specification rather than a courier run with extra blankets.
- One thing, one move. Single item moves for a short local hop, and long distance for the cross-country version.
- More than a courier job. Small removals, flat removals, student moves and house removals when it is a load rather than an item.
If you are not sure which one your job is, ring and describe it. We would rather point you at a cheaper product of ours — or at a parcel network — than take a booking on the wrong ladder.
Where we work
We are based in Uxbridge (UB8) and Chalfont St Peter, which shapes how quickly we can get to you rather than whether we will.
- Fastest. West London and Hillingdon — Uxbridge, Hayes, Ruislip, Ickenham, West Drayton, Denham — plus south Buckinghamshire: Gerrards Cross, the Chalfonts, Iver, Beaconsfield, Amersham. These postcodes get the best chance of a collection within the hour.
- All London boroughs on the flat £55 within-the-M25 rate, whichever side of the river.
- The Home Counties — Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Berkshire, Surrey, north Kent and south Essex — almost all inside the £95 minimum, which covers the first fifty loaded miles.
- The UK mainland at £1.90 a loaded mile: Bristol £228, Birmingham £238, Nottingham £247, Cardiff £295, Leeds £371, Manchester £380, Liverpool £409, Edinburgh £760 overnight. A whole load one way is a van-load day rate instead — £450 to the Midlands, £600 to the North. See London to Birmingham, London to Manchester and London to Leeds.
- Quoted separately. Northern Ireland, the Scottish islands, the Isle of Wight and anything else needing a ferry booking.
Vans are matched to the load rather than the biggest one every time — our guide to SWB, LWB and Luton van sizes explains what fits in which.

Typical items and what they cost
The things we are asked to courier most, at three worked distances. Where an item normally needs two people, the second-person charge is shown with it.
| Item | Within the M25 | ~60 miles (e.g. Brighton) | ~200 miles (e.g. Manchester) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two- or three-seat sofa | £55 | £114 | £380 |
| Corner sofa (two people) | £55 + £45 | £114 + £45 | £380 + £45 |
| Wardrobe, chest of drawers or sideboard | £55 | £114 | £380 |
| Bed frame and mattress | £55 | £114 | £380 |
| Fridge freezer or washing machine | £55 | £114 | £380 |
| American-style fridge (two people) | £55 + £45 | £114 + £45 | £380 + £45 |
| Treadmill or multigym (two people) | £55 + £45 | £114 + £45 | £380 + £45 |
| Dining table, desk or office chair | £55 | £114 | £380 |
| Pallet or boxed stock, hand-unloadable | £55 | £114 | £380 |
| Small marketplace pickup (one seller, local) | £45 | £114 | £380 |
| Several pieces in one run | £195 | £195 | £450–£600 |
Distances are loaded miles at £1.90 a mile with a £95 minimum — your own route may be shorter or longer than the examples. Add £45 for a second person on anything the driver cannot safely carry alone. Our vans are hand-loaded and have no tail lift, so a pallet needs to be breakable down or have a forklift at both ends.
How we compare with the rest of the courier market
Published prices from across the market, read on the same day, with what each one actually buys. Same-day dedicated vans, shared networks and quote marketplaces are different products and are marked as such.
| Provider | Job | Published price | What it buys |
|---|---|---|---|
| Van Thats Quick | One item, London → Manchester, collected today | £380 | Yes — one driver, today, loading included |
| AMV Couriers (rate card) | Dedicated same-day van, per loaded mile | Small van £1.20 · SWB £1.50 · LWB £1.80 · XLWB £1.90 · Luton £2.20 (min £45–£125) | Yes — same model as ours |
| Dispatchit Couriers (rate card) | Transit van, per mile one way | £1.70/mile, £30 minimum; waiting £30/hr after 10 min; weekends +20% | Yes |
| HG Same Day (cost guide) | Small / MWB / LWB / Luton, per mile | £1.30 / £1.40 / £1.60 / £1.80 | Yes — industry guide |
| Transport Executive | One item London → Manchester, fixed date | £175–£230 | Dedicated, booked date — not collected today |
| Porta Delivery | Sofa London → Manchester, collected today by 5pm | from £185 (from £120 flexible date) | Same-day only with three add-ons |
| AnyVan | Two-seat sofa, national | £58–£184 | No — shared network, multi-day window |
| Shiply | Backload examples (fridge Hampshire → Plymouth) | £40–£60 | No — spare space on someone else’s route |
Figures read 2026-09-11 from each provider’s published pages. Same-day dedicated couriers price per loaded mile — our £1.90 is the published rate for an extra-long-wheelbase Transit, and we send a Transit or Luton, not a small van. Shared-network prices depend on a driver already passing your route, on their date.

Courier Service — your questions answered
How much does a van courier cost in London?
One item anywhere inside the M25 is £55, fixed before we collect. A local marketplace or private-seller collection is £45, an appliance delivery is £55, and several pieces in one run is a £195 van load. Add £45 for a second person. Collection today is included rather than surcharged.
What is a dedicated van courier?
One driver and one van committed to your job, with nothing else in the back, going today. You are not waiting for somebody else's route to line up: the driver loads, carries and hands over, and you have their number. It is the opposite of a parcel network, where your item shares a route through depots, and of a shared van carrying eight or ten jobs at once.
Why are AnyVan and Shiply cheaper than you?
Because those are shared vans, and we will not pretend otherwise. One van carries several jobs on a route built around the driver's week, which is why the headline is low and the collection window is several days wide and can move. We charge more for a van that leaves for your job today with nothing else in it, a driver you can ring and someone who carries it in. If the date does not matter and the budget does, a shared van is the right choice.
When should I use a parcel courier instead?
Whenever the item is small, boxed and inside a parcel network's limits — usually about 30kg and a longest side of roughly 1.5m. A network will beat us by a wide margin on those, because your parcel shares a route with thousands of others. Ring and describe it; if that is your job, we will say so rather than quote you a van.
How much is a courier to anywhere else in the UK?
Outside the M25 it is £1.90 for every loaded mile between collection and delivery, with a £95 minimum that covers the first fifty. So Oxford or Guildford is about £105, Brighton £114, Bristol £228, Birmingham £238, Manchester £380 and Edinburgh £760. A whole load one way is a van-load day rate instead: £450 to the Midlands or £600 to the North.
Can you deliver the same day?
That is the product. Where the diary allows we collect today, usually within about two hours of your call, and deliver today up to roughly 200 loaded miles. Beyond that it runs overnight and lands the next morning. There is no same-day surcharge — inside the M25 it is the ordinary £55. Ring early, because one van does one job at a time.
Do you send one person or two?
One driver as standard — that is what makes the £55 single-item price possible. A second person is £45 and is the right call for corner sofas, American-style fridges, treadmills, safes and anything with a turning staircase in the way. Full two-mover crews are a separate hourly product at £89 an hour.
Will the driver carry it inside?
Yes. The driver loads, carries and places the item in the room you want it in, with floor protection down at both ends. That is the main practical difference between this and a parcel delivery, whose contract ends at the doorstep. Tell us about stairs, lifts and parking when you book so it stays inside the fixed price.
What does "loaded mile" mean?
The miles your item is actually in the van — from the collection door to the delivery door. The drive out to you and the empty run home are already inside the £1.90 rate, so you are not paying for them twice, and there is no fuel surcharge added at the end. Under about fifty loaded miles the £95 minimum applies instead.
Do you do business and trade deliveries?
Yes, and it is a large part of what we do: retail and showroom deliveries, site and trade runs, office and equipment moves, failed-delivery rescues, and standing collections between two addresses. A recurring run is priced as a route rather than as a fresh one-off each week. See commercial deliveries.
Can you collect from a shop, a warehouse or a private seller?
All three. A local marketplace collection is £45 and a store or click-and-collect run is £55. Give us the seller's details or the order number and we will arrange the window directly — you do not need to be at the collection end. See marketplace delivery and IKEA delivery.
What will you not carry?
Anything needing a hoist or a crane, hazardous goods, cash and high-value small items, live animals, perishables needing refrigeration, waste and clearance loads, and pallets that need a tail lift. Full-size pianos and safes need equipment a courier van does not carry — see piano moving. We will tell you on the phone rather than on your doorstep.
Is my item insured while you have it?
Ask us for the current insurance certificate, the cover limits and any exclusions that apply to your job before you book, and we will send them over. Note that standard goods-in-transit cover across this industry commonly excludes cash, jewellery and similar valuables, so declare anything unusual before booking rather than after.
Do you charge extra for the Congestion Charge or ULEZ?
The Congestion Charge (£18) is passed through only where the job actually enters the zone on a charging day — it is not added to every London job. There is never a ULEZ surcharge, because our vans are ULEZ-compliant. Both are stated in the quote before you agree to it.
