Hiring a van and driver is a different thing from hiring a van. With self-drive van hire you collect the vehicle, you provide the licence and the deposit, you do every lift yourself, and you bring it back with a full tank. With Van Thats Quick you get the van and the person driving it — and that person does the carrying. For most one-off jobs that works out cheaper by the time you have counted fuel, insurance excess, your own time and the two friends you had to bribe.
The service is charged by the hour and starts from £65 an hour for a van and one driver, with a two-hour minimum on most jobs. If the load is heavy, the access is tight or there are stairs involved, a van with two movers is from £95 an hour — the second pair of hands usually pays for itself, because a job that takes one person three hours often takes two people ninety minutes. Longer bookings and full house moves are quoted as a fixed all-in price rather than an open meter, so you know the number before we start.
What people actually use it for. Collecting a sofa, a bed or a dining table from a shop or a private seller. Clearing a flat at the end of a tenancy. Moving a one-bed across town. Shifting stock, display units or equipment between sites. Getting a delivery from a store that will only drop to the kerb up three flights of stairs and into the right room. If it fits in a van and needs a human being to lift it, it is this service — see man and van for the hourly work and large item courier when it is one big thing going a long way.
Why not a self-drive hire van? Three reasons people come back to us. First, the hidden costs: the daily rate you see advertised rarely includes the insurance excess reduction, the fuel, the congestion or ULEZ charge, or the hour you spend at the depot each end. Second, the lifting — a hire van comes with nobody to help you carry a wardrobe down a staircase. Third, the risk: if you scuff a doorframe or drop something, it is on you. We turn up with the van, the straps, the blankets and the crew, and we carry the job.
What we bring. Trolleys, straps, moving blankets and floor protection as standard, plus the experience to get an awkward piece round a tight landing without taking the plaster with it. Ask us for the current insurance certificate, cover limits and exclusions that apply to your job before you book.
Where we work. We are based in Uxbridge and Chalfont St Peter, so west London, Hillingdon, Buckinghamshire and the M40/M25 corridor are our home turf and usually get same-day or next-day slots. We also run further afield — see long distance moves for anything crossing the country, which is quoted as a fixed day rate rather than by the hour so you are not watching a meter tick over on the motorway.
Booking. Tell us what is moving, both addresses, and whether there are stairs or a parking problem at either end — those three things decide the price far more than the mileage does. Send photos on WhatsApp for the quickest answer, call 07547 467335, or request a quote and we will come back with a fixed figure. The Congestion Charge (£18) is passed through only where it actually applies, and our vans are ULEZ-compliant. Full detail on our pricing page.

Van and Driver Hire — your questions answered
How much does it cost to hire a van and driver?
From £65 an hour for a van and one driver, with a two-hour minimum on most jobs, or from £95 an hour for a van and two movers when there is heavy furniture or a staircase involved. Longer bookings and full house moves are quoted as a fixed all-in price instead of by the hour. Send photos and both postcodes and we will confirm the figure before we set off.
Is hiring a van with a driver cheaper than self-drive van hire?
For a single job, usually yes once everything is counted. A self-drive quote typically excludes fuel, the insurance excess reduction, the Congestion Charge, the depot trip at each end and your own time — and it comes with nobody to help you lift. Our rate includes the driver, the fuel and the labour. For a full week of daily use, self-drive hire will normally win on raw cost.
Do you help with the loading and carrying?
Yes — that is the point of the service. The driver loads, carries and unloads as standard, and a second mover can be added from £45 or booked as the van-plus-two rate from £95 an hour. We bring trolleys, straps, moving blankets and floor protection.
Is there a minimum booking?
Two hours on most jobs. That covers the great majority of single-item collections and small flat moves. If the job is obviously going to run longer we will normally quote a fixed half-day or full-day price instead, so the cost is settled up front.
What size van do you bring?
We match the van to the load rather than sending the biggest one every time. A single item or a few boxes goes in a smaller van; a flat move or bulky furniture gets a Transit or a Luton. Tell us what is moving and we will pick it — our guide to what size van you need walks through the usual cases.
Do you cover outside London?
Yes. We are based in Uxbridge and Chalfont St Peter, so west London, Hillingdon, Buckinghamshire and the M40/M25 corridor get the fastest slots, but we work across the UK mainland. Anything crossing the country is quoted as a fixed day rate — see long distance moves — rather than charged by the hour on the motorway.
Do I need to be there?
Someone needs to give access at both ends and confirm what is going. It does not have to be you — plenty of our jobs are booked by one person and let in by another at the far end. Just tell us who to expect and give us a number for them.
Are you insured?
Ask us for the current insurance certificate, the cover limits and any exclusions that apply to your job before you book, and we will send them over. We would rather you check the paperwork than take a claim on trust.
