Rickmansworth Recycling Centre: Closed Tuesdays & Wednesdays — and the New ePass

Is Rickmansworth tip open today?

Not if it is a Tuesday or a Wednesday. The site runs a five-day service:

The hours are the same all year — Hertfordshire does not run reduced winter hours. The site is open on all bank holidays except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, so a bank holiday Monday is fine.

Where is Rickmansworth Recycling Centre?

Riverside Drive, Rickmansworth, WD3 1FS. Riverside Drive is the A404, running adjacent to the Rickmansworth Aquadrome and the canal, near The Bury.

It is a straightforward run from Croxley Green, Mill End and Batchworth, and manageable from Chorleywood and Sarratt. From the Buckinghamshire side — Chalfont St Peter, Little Chalfont — be careful: if you pay Council Tax to Buckinghamshire rather than a Hertfordshire council, there is currently no out-of-county registration route for you at all. (Chorleywood West is a Three Rivers ward, so despite the name its residents qualify as Hertfordshire locals.)

Hertfordshire publishes a live queue camera for the site, updating every ten seconds and blurred for privacy, alongside a busyness indicator. Worth a look before a weekend trip.

The Hertfordshire ePass

The distinction matters here more than at most sites, because Rickmansworth sits on a three-way boundary. The ePass exists precisely to prioritise Hertfordshire residents and reduce use by people who pay their Council Tax to Buckinghamshire, Hillingdon or Harrow.

If you are a genuine Hertfordshire resident it is a one-off administrative step. If you are not, it is the point at which the trip stops being viable.

What you need at the gate

• Proof of address every visit — driving licence, Council Tax bill, Hertfordshire bus pass or a utility bill
• You may use the site if you pay Council Tax to a Hertfordshire council
• Vans, trailers, or arriving from outside Hertfordshire: you need a permit, applied for in advance
• No business or trade waste — the county runs a separate commercial service
• DIY and home improvement waste is limited — bring more than the allowance and you may be turned away
• Sites may close early if containers reach capacity

Two of those are worth expanding.

The van and trailer ePass. It is free and issued instantly online through Hertfordshire County Council, so you can sort it on your phone before you set off — but it is capped at 12 visits in any 12 months, with no exceptions. The vehicle you borrow for a clearance is exactly the vehicle that needs it, so register before you load.

The DIY limit. Hertfordshire accepts only a limited amount of home improvement waste per visit. Unlike Buckinghamshire, which charges per item beyond an allowance, Hertfordshire’s response to an over-limit load is to turn you away. Check the current restriction before you load.

The site may also close early if containers reach capacity, which on a five-day site absorbing two days of demand is a genuine risk on Thursdays and at weekends.

What Rickmansworth accepts

It is a broad-range site. Alongside garden waste, cardboard, paper, wood, metals, electricals, glass, plastics, batteries and textiles, it takes:

• Fridges, freezers, ovens and hobs
• TVs and monitors
• Car batteries, engine oil and cooking oil
• Fluorescent tubes and low-energy bulbs
• Plasterboard and tyres
• Plastic carrier bags, rigid plastics and food packaging
• Toner cartridges, mobile phones, CDs and DVDs
• Shoes, textiles and books for reuse

Asbestos is not accepted here — only specific Hertfordshire sites take it. Clinical waste, explosives and ammunition are also refused, as is anything commercial.

There is a book reuse stream and donation facilities, so serviceable items need not be destroyed.

When the tip is not the answer

Five open days, a permit regime and a DIY cap create predictable gaps:

• It is Tuesday or Wednesday and Waterdale is a longer trip
• You are in a van without a van and trailer ePass — free and instant online, so register before you join the queue
• You pay Council Tax outside Hertfordshire — Buckinghamshire, Hillingdon or Harrow residents need a permit
• It is a building or renovation load — over the limit means turned away, not charged
• It is trade waste — refused outright

Who actually runs your waste service?

This is the source of most of the confusion, and it is worth ten seconds of your time because it determines who you contact when something goes wrong. Hertfordshire is a two-tier area, and the two tiers do completely different jobs.

This catches Rickmansworth residents constantly. Three Rivers District Council handles your bins, your garden waste subscription and your bulky collections. Hertfordshire County Council runs the Riverside Drive tip, the ePass and the van permits. They are different organisations with different websites and different phone numbers.

The practical upshot: a permit or ePass issued by the county has nothing to do with your bin collections, and a district council complaint about a missed bin will not help you at the tip gate. If you are chasing something, work out which tier owns it first.

Bulky collection vs a trip to Riverside Drive

If the reason you are considering the tip is a sofa, a mattress or a fridge, the trip may not be the right call at all — particularly given the Tuesday and Wednesday closure and the van permit requirement.

Three Rivers District Council runs a bulky waste collection for exactly these items, booked and paid for through the district rather than the county. The one thing that is never worth it is leaving items beside a communal bin store or on the verge. Fly-tipping enforcement in Three Rivers is active, and liability follows the waste back to whoever produced it — not the person who dumped it.

Which nearby tip is open today?

Four of the recycling centres within reach of this area close two days a week — and they close on different days. If your local site is shut, this is where to go instead.

Being open is not the same as being usable, though. You can only use a site run by the authority you pay Council Tax to, unless you pay a non-resident fee or hold an out-of-county permit. Buckinghamshire charges non-residents £28.80 to £472.70 per visit by vehicle and waste type; Hertfordshire's out-of-county ePass is limited to Cambridgeshire and Essex residents; Harrow and the Royal Borough are residents-only.

The three exceptions worth remembering: Slough residents can use Buckinghamshire’s Burnham and Langley for free, Royal Borough residents can use Slough’s Chalvey, and Slough residents can use Chalvey too.
