How Much Does the Council Charge to Remove a Sofa? 7 Councils Compared for 2026

Council bulky waste prices swing from free to £65 for the same sofa, depending on which side of a borough boundary you live. Here are the real 2026 charges for West London and the Home Counties, and the rules that catch people out.

boltQuick Answer

Most councils charge £30 to £65 to collect a sofa or other large items, and the fee usually covers a bundle of 3 to 6 items, so one sofa costs the same as five things. In 2026: Ealing £30, Hounslow £41, Hillingdon £53 (£39 over-65), Brent £55, Three Rivers £64, Buckinghamshire £65, and Harrow is free once a year. The catch: you carry it to the kerb by early morning and wait for a slot. If you need it carried out of the house or gone today, a man-and-van sofa collection starts from £95 for a 2-seater.

Prices are per booking, not per item, and were checked against each council’s own booking pages for our borough guides. Councils change fees each April, so confirm on the council website before you book. Full details: Hillingdon, Brent, Harrow, Hounslow, Ealing, Buckinghamshire and Three Rivers.

How much do councils charge to remove large items?

The same price list covers every bulky item, not just sofas. Wardrobes, beds, mattresses, tables, chests of drawers and washing machines all count as one item each, so the trick is to fill the booking. A single sofa in Buckinghamshire costs £65, but so do a sofa, an armchair and a mattress together.

What the council will not take is just as important. Across all seven councils, building and DIY waste (rubble, kitchen units, bathroom suites, plasterboard), garden waste, tyres and hazardous items are excluded. If your sofa is part of a refit or a clear-out, the council slot only solves part of the job.

What about mattresses and fridge freezers?

Mattresses are accepted on every bulky service above and count as one item. Note that a bed base and a mattress count as two in Brent and Ealing.

Fridges and freezers are where councils differ most. Ealing takes one per household within the normal booking, Brent allows up to two per booking, but Hillingdon is currently unable to collect fridges or freezers at all. Fridges contain refrigerant gases that must be removed by a licensed treatment site, which is why some councils have dropped them. See our free fridge freezer disposal guide for every option.

The catches with council collection

1. You carry it out

Council crews collect from your boundary, not from inside. A three-seater down a flight of stairs is a two-person job, and the collection crew will not help.

2. Early start, no time slot

Items normally have to be out by 6am or 7am on the day, and you can wait a week or more for the next available date.

3. Booked items only

Anything not on the booking is left behind, and you usually cannot add items once it is confirmed.

4. Sofas must be destroyed

Since 2023, upholstered seating that may contain persistent organic pollutants (POPs) has to be incinerated rather than landfilled. Councils handle that for you, but it is why fly-tipped sofas are taken so seriously.

Council or man and van: which is cheaper?

For one or two ordinary items that you can carry to the kerb yourself, and you can wait for a date, the council is cheaper and we will tell you so. A man and van wins when the sofa is upstairs or needs carrying out, when you want it gone today, or when there is other waste the council will not take.
