Hounslow Council Bulky Waste Collection 2026: £41 for Five Items, the 6ft Rule & the Same-Day Alternative

Hounslow charges £41 to take up to five large items from your property, and £41 is the minimum even if you only have one. Add the two-person lifting limit and the 6ft size limit, and it pays to know the rules before you drag a sofa to the front garden. Here’s how the service works across Hounslow, Feltham, Isleworth, Brentford and Chiswick, and when a same-day man-and-van is the better call.

bolt Quick Answer

Hounslow Council’s bulky waste collection costs £41 for up to five items, plus £8.20 for each extra item, and £41 is the minimum charge even for one item. Households on Council Tax Reduction pay £15 for five (£3 per extra item). Book by phone on 020 8583 5555 (option one), or online through the West London Waste Authority’s bulky waste service, which charges Hounslow addresses the same £41 for up to five. Collections run Monday to Friday, 7am to 3pm, and items must be out by 7am, inside your property boundary at the front — not in the back garden, down a side entrance or on the pavement. It won’t take anything two people can’t lift, anything over 183cm (6ft), garden waste, hazardous waste or waste from home improvements. For bigger, heavier or mixed loads, a man-and-van collection starts from £95 and carries it out for you.

If you’ve got an old sofa, a dead fridge or a broken bed to get rid of in Hounslow, Feltham or Isleworth, the council’s bulky waste collection is the natural first stop. At £41 for five items it is good value — provided you have five of them, they’re light enough for two people, and you can get them to the front of your property yourself.

This guide covers exactly how Hounslow’s service works in 2026: the charges, what it refuses, the rules that get items left behind, and where a same-day man-and-van does what the council can’t. The council figures come from Hounslow’s own bulky waste page on hounslow.gov.uk, checked in September 2026. Planning a trip to the tip instead? Our Hounslow tip and Space Waye guide covers the recycling centre in detail.

How Hounslow’s bulky waste collection works

The service is for people who live in the borough and are registered to pay Council Tax there; businesses can’t use it. You book by phone on 020 8583 5555 (option one) and pay by debit or credit card, choosing your collection day and your collection point as you book.

The council says its own online form is ‘coming soon’. In the meantime the West London Waste Authority’s bulky waste website takes online bookings for Hounslow addresses at the same £41 for up to five items, choosing from the front of the house or the communal bin area — though an online booking can’t be amended once it’s complete.

Council collections run Monday to Friday, 7am to 3pm, all year apart from a two-week break over Christmas and New Year. You can change the items or cancel until 12 noon on the working day before, by phone only, and there’s no refund after that.

How much does Hounslow bulky waste collection cost in 2026?

Hounslow charges by the item, with a five-item minimum:

Who Up to 5 items Each extra item
Standard resident rate£41£8.20
Council Tax Reduction£15£3
Eligible landlords£72£14.40
Hounslow rule Detail
Minimum chargeThe five-item price, even if you book one item
BagsThree strong clear bags count as one item, so up to 15 bags on a five-item booking; each tied, no more than 10kg, and no general household rubbish, hazardous waste or unwrapped sharp items
Size and weightNothing two people can’t lift, and nothing over 183cm (6ft) in height, length or width
Where they collect fromInside your property boundary at the front, by the entrance; flats from a communal area, with your landlord’s permission. Not back gardens, side entrances or the pavement
WhenMonday to Friday, 7am to 3pm; items out by 7am; no collections for two weeks over Christmas and New Year
Booking lead timeNot published: you choose the day when you book
Changes and cancellationsBy phone until 12 noon the working day before; no refund after that
ConcessionsIncome-based Council Tax Reduction: £15 for up to five items and £3 per extra item. Single person discount and disability band relief don’t qualify

So one item costs £41, five items cost £41, and ten items cost £82 — £41 plus five extras at £8.20. The five-item minimum is why Hounslow itself suggests waiting until you have five or more items before you book.

The £72 landlord rate is for landlords helping to meet local housing demand through the council’s Direct Let or Private Sector Leasing schemes, or with a licensed house in multiple occupation, and you’ll need evidence when you book. On the reduced rate, quote your six-digit Council Tax Reduction reference.

What Hounslow will collect

  • check_circleFurniture, and mattresses and beds.
  • check_circleWhite goods such as fridges and washing machines.
  • check_circleElectricals, including computers and televisions.
  • check_circleBicycles.
  • check_circleCooking oil, up to 25 litres in a sealed container.
  • check_circleStrong clear bags, three to an item, under the rules above.

Everything must be clean and dry as far as possible. Hounslow won’t collect items stored somewhere damp enough to cause mould or pests, and sofas or mattresses left outside uncovered can be refused for mould and damp, so keep upholstered items covered or put them out on the morning of the collection.

What Hounslow bulky collection won’t take

  • blockAnything too heavy for two people to lift — the council’s own examples are cast iron baths, American-style fridge-freezers, pianos, paving slabs and rubble.
  • blockAnything larger than 183cm (6ft) in height, length or width.
  • blockGarden waste and trees.
  • blockHazardous waste, including tyres, asbestos, fluorescent tubes, chemicals and paint.
  • blockWaste from home improvements — the old kitchen, bathroom or flooring from a renovation.
  • blockSofas or mattresses that have become waterlogged.
  • blockAnything you didn’t list, or that isn’t visible where you said it would be.

The 6ft rule is the one to check before you book: measure long sofas, tall wardrobes and big tables, because an item that’s too big is left behind with a note explaining why.

For home-improvement waste, Hounslow points you to a reuse and recycling centre, where it may be charged because it’s classed as industrial waste, or back to the contractor who did the work.

Putting your items out

  • Out by 7am on the collection day, as close to the front edge of your property (by the entrance) as is safely practical — but inside your boundary, never on the pavement or road.
  • Clearly visible and reachable, not behind fences, walls, gates or parked cars.
  • Not in the back garden or down a side entrance. Crews can’t collect from there, and they won’t knock on the door.
  • Flats: in the communal area without blocking bins, walkways or stores, with permission from your landlord or managing agent. Above a shop, use a spot the crew can reach that doesn’t block the pavement or road.
  • Only the listed items are taken. Anything extra is left at the property.

If your items aren’t out by 7am they’re recorded as ‘not presented’, the council won’t come back, and the fee isn’t refunded. A genuinely missed collection has to be reported after 5pm on the day and by 5pm the next day, and the council returns within two working days.

Hounslow Council vs a man and van: which is cheaper?

The council’s figures are Hounslow’s own; ours are the published rates from our price list.

Where the council genuinely wins, and we’ll say so

For light, ordinary items you can put out at the front yourself, book Hounslow. Five items are £41 and ten are £82, both under our £95 minimum load, and on Council Tax Reduction five items are £15. We’d rather tell you that than take the job.

Where the answer flips:

  • Anything two people can’t lift, or anything longer or taller than 6ft.
  • Garden or renovation waste in the mix.
  • Items upstairs, in the back garden or down a side passage that you can’t get to the front.
  • A weekend or same-day deadline — council crews collect on weekdays only.

The tip: Space Waye, and the alternatives

If you can move the waste yourself, Hounslow’s reuse and recycling centre is Space Waye, on Pier Road off Faggs Road, North Feltham Trading Estate, Feltham TW14 0TH. It’s open 8am to 3.30pm, seven days a week. The council’s page still shows the schedule from the six-month trial that began on 9 March 2026: no booking Monday to Thursday, and a booking needed on Fridays, weekends and bank holidays.

Two rules matter if you’re thinking of hiring a van instead of booking a collection: residents can visit with a van or trailer only once per calendar year, and a vehicle from a removal company or a ‘man-with-a-van’ is charged as trade waste. Our Hounslow tip guide covers the ID, visit limits and van gate in full.

Hounslow also lists three other West London centres its residents can use: Greenford Road in Ealing, Townmead Road in Richmond, and Abbey Road in Brent.

When a same-day man-and-van makes more sense

Hounslow’s service is designed around what two people can lift from the front of your property on a weekday. A man-and-van rubbish removal covers the rest: our two-person crew carries from inside, upstairs and the back garden, takes garden and renovation waste in the same load, and works seven days a week. For furniture and appliances on their own, see our bulky waste collection; sofas and mattresses have their own all-in sofa and mattress disposal prices.

Rubbish removal is priced by the space your load takes in the van: a minimum load is £95, a quarter load from £195, a half load from £320, a three-quarter load from £405 and a full Luton van from £495. Every load price includes two people, all the loading and lifting, and disposal — fridges and freezers carry a separate recycling fee, listed on our price list. Prefer to pay by time? A man and van is £89 an hour for a van and a two-person crew, with a two-hour minimum of £178, or £340 for a half day and £640 for a full day.

Send a photo on WhatsApp for a fixed price before the van sets off. We cover Hounslow and Feltham, plus Isleworth, Brentford, Chiswick, Heston, Cranford and Bedfont.

Hounslow Bulky Waste FAQs

How much is bulky waste collection in Hounslow?

£41 for up to five items and £8.20 for each extra item. The £41 is a minimum charge, so one item costs the same as five. Households on Council Tax Reduction pay £15 for up to five items and £3 per extra item.

How do I book a Hounslow bulky waste collection?

Call 020 8583 5555 and choose option one; you pick the collection day and collection point as you book, and pay by debit or credit card. Hounslow addresses can also book online through the West London Waste Authority’s bulky waste service, at the same £41 for up to five items.

Who gets the cheaper rate?

Residents receiving income-based Council Tax Reduction (Council Tax Support) pay £15 for up to five items and £3 per extra item, quoting their six-digit reference. Single person discount and disability band relief do not qualify.

Will Hounslow collect from inside my house?

No. Items must be inside your property boundary at the front, as near the entrance as is safely practical, by 7am. Crews do not collect from back gardens or side entrances and will not knock on your door. Flats use a communal area, with the landlord’s permission.

What won’t Hounslow’s bulky collection take?

Anything two people cannot lift, such as cast iron baths or pianos; anything over 183cm (6ft) in any dimension; garden waste and trees; hazardous waste including tyres, asbestos, fluorescent tubes, chemicals and paint; waste from home improvements; and waterlogged sofas or mattresses.

Can I put bags out with my bulky items?

Yes. Strong clear bags count as items: three bags equal one item, so a five-item booking can be up to 15 bags. Each must be tied, weigh no more than 10kg and contain no general household rubbish, hazardous waste or unwrapped sharp items.

What happens if my items aren’t collected?

If they were out by 7am as booked, report it after 5pm on collection day and by 5pm the next day, and the council will return within two working days. Items not out by 7am, too heavy or not as listed are left behind, and there are no refunds for missed collections.

Is a man and van worth it if the council only charges £41?

For light, ordinary items you can put out at the front yourself, no — the council is cheaper than our £95 minimum load. A man and van makes sense for heavy or oversized items, garden or renovation waste, anything that has to be carried out from inside, or a weekend or same-day deadline.
