10 Tips for Moving House in West London
Uxbridge, Ealing, Harrow, Hayes, Hillingdon — local insider knowledge to make your West London move stress-free.
Moving anywhere in London has its challenges, but West London comes with its own unique quirks. From the narrow Victorian terraces of Ealing to the suburban crescents of Harrow, from the busy A40 corridor to the quiet lanes around Ickenham — knowing the area makes all the difference.
As a man and van service based in Uxbridge, we've done thousands of moves across West London. Here's everything we've learned.
1 Sort Your Parking Permits Early
West London boroughs are strict about parking. If you're in a Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ), you'll need a temporary parking suspension for the removal van. Here's the breakdown:
Hillingdon (Uxbridge, Hayes)
Apply via hillingdon.gov.uk — 5 working days notice, ~£50
Ealing
Apply via ealing.gov.uk — 10 working days notice, ~£65
Harrow
Apply via harrow.gov.uk — 5 working days notice, ~£45
Hounslow
Apply via hounslow.gov.uk — 5 working days notice, ~£55
Pro tip: Many streets in Uxbridge town centre and around Brunel University have permit parking. If your new home is on one of these streets, don't forget to apply for your resident's permit on day one.
2 Know Your Routes — Avoid the A40 at Rush Hour
The A40 (Western Avenue / Westway) is the main artery through West London. It's fast when it's clear and a car park when it's not. Here's what we've learned from years of driving it:
- Avoid 7-9am and 4-7pm — The A40 from Hillingdon to Hanger Lane is gridlocked during these times
- M4/M25 junction (J4b) — This is one of the worst bottlenecks in West London. Plan around it
- Use the A312 for north-south trips between Hayes and Harrow — much less traffic than the A40
- Uxbridge Road (A4020) is a good alternative to the A40 for shorter east-west trips, though slower
- Start early: A 7am start means clear roads and you're done by lunchtime
3 Watch Out for Narrow Streets
West London has a mix of housing stock, and some streets are tighter than you'd expect:
- Ealing Victorian terraces — Beautiful houses, but the streets were built for horses, not long-wheelbase vans. Let your driver know in advance
- Harrow-on-the-Hill — Steep, narrow lanes around the old village. A Luton van won't fit down some of them
- Hayes town centre — Tight residential streets near the station with limited turning space
- Uxbridge — The newer estates (like Packet Boat Lane) have good access, but some older roads off the High Street are challenging
Always tell your man and van about any access issues. We can send the right-sized vehicle for your street.
4 Understand ULEZ & Congestion Charges
Two charges to be aware of when moving in West London:
ULEZ (All of London)
Covers everywhere inside the M25 — including all of West London. Non-compliant vehicles pay £12.50/day. All our vans are ULEZ compliant.
Congestion Charge (Central only)
Only applies if moving to/from zones 1-2 (Central London). £15/day, Mon-Fri 7am-6pm, Sat-Sun 12-6pm. West London suburbs are outside this zone.
5 Move Mid-Week for the Best Prices
Friday is the most popular moving day in the UK — and West London is no exception. Here's when to move for the best deal:
- Best: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday — lowest demand, best availability, lowest prices
- OK: Monday — slightly busier but still good value
- Avoid: Friday, Saturday — premium rates, fully booked, more traffic
Also avoid the last weekend of the month — that's when most tenancy agreements end, making it the busiest time for removals.
6 Use a Local Man and Van (Not a National Chain)
A man and van based in West London will always beat a big national company for local moves. Here's why:
- No travel charges — We're already in Uxbridge, so we don't charge for getting to you
- Local knowledge — We know which streets are tight, where to park, and the fastest routes
- Faster response — Need a same-day van? We can be there in 30 minutes, not 2 hours
- Better prices — Lower overheads than national chains means savings passed to you
7 Know Your Borough's Waste Rules
Moving generates rubbish. Don't get caught out:
- Hillingdon — Free tip at New Years Green Lane (UB9). Book a slot online first
- Ealing — Recycling centre at Greenford Road. Proof of address required
- Harrow — Forward Drive civic amenity site. Free for residents
If you have bulky items to get rid of, we offer house clearance services too.
8 Plan Around School Times
West London is full of schools, and school-run traffic is real. Areas particularly affected:
- Harrow-on-the-Hill — Harrow School area gets very congested 8-9am and 3-4pm
- Ealing Broadway — Multiple schools nearby cause traffic on Uxbridge Road
- Around Brunel University (Uxbridge) — Busy during term-time, especially September and June
If possible, schedule your move to avoid 8-9:30am and 2:30-4pm on school days.
9 Check If You Need a Flat-Access Assessment
West London has a lot of converted Victorian and Edwardian houses, plus purpose-built flats from the 60s-80s. Common issues:
- Narrow staircases in Ealing terraces that won't fit a king-size mattress
- No lift in older blocks — carrying a sofa up 4 flights in a Harrow council block takes time
- Tight communal hallways in converted houses across Hillingdon
Tell us about stairs and access when you book. We can send a two-man team for tricky jobs. Check our flat removals service for details.
10 Get a Fixed Quote (Not Hourly)
West London traffic is unpredictable. An hourly rate can spiral if you hit traffic on the A40 or can't find parking. Always ask for:
- A fixed, all-inclusive price that covers loading, driving, and unloading
- Confirmation that fuel and ULEZ are included in the price
- Written confirmation by email or text — not just verbal
At Van Thats Quick, the price we quote is the price you pay. No hidden fees, no clock-watching. Call 07547 467333 for a free quote.
West London Area Quick Guide
Uxbridge (UB8, UB10)
Our home base. Good road access via A40 and M40. Mix of new-builds and older housing. Free parking easier than most of London.
Ealing (W5, W13)
"Queen of the suburbs." Victorian terraces with narrow streets. Heavy CPZ enforcement. Book parking suspension early.
Harrow (HA1, HA2)
Hilly around the old town. Good suburban streets elsewhere. Watch for school traffic. Kenton Road gets busy.
Hayes (UB3, UB4)
Near Heathrow — watch for flight path noise if viewing. Good A-road access but Hayes town centre streets can be tight.
Hillingdon (UB10)
Quiet suburban feel. RAF Northolt nearby. Good access to A40 and M40. Mostly spacious streets — easy for vans.
Hounslow (TW3, TW4)
Near Heathrow and the Great West Road. Good for A4/M4 access. Mix of terraces and semis. Hounslow High Street can be congested.
